Through the hard work of 3 of our club members. Tom Cartier, Bill Meierhof and Gerry Sundquist we have become involved in the cure for Diabetes at the University of Minnesota-Diabetes Institute.
The Cartier Challenge is an annual Golf, tennis and fishing outing that is a great fundraiser for the Institute. (June 28th this year). We supply the pigs that are involved in the research for a cure for diabetes and in islet cell transplantation.
This is a hands on project for the club to build a outdoor classroom for the school
Dedicated 8/11/2000
Each May we select 1 person from each school among our junior rotarians from Hermantown, Proctor, and Marshall. Then we select 1 student from St. Scholastica and UMD. Each person (5 in all) recieves a $1,000.00 scholarship to be applied to their future education.
We have become involved with the Pioneer Group at Woodland Hills. We have taken the students on vocational tours of some of our members businesses. And on May 14th the boys helped us clean up our stretch of Hwy 35 in Esko.
Each year near the Christmas Season we have an auction at our regular club meeting under the direction of our own Col. Karl Norman. We have several rules for the auction. Each member is to bring an item to be auctioned. They must have made it themselves or received it as a gift. No buying something. It is a great fellowship and the items range from Lake Superior fishing trips to Gourmet Dinners prepared in members homes.
The entire membership of Duluth Skyline Rotary Club are Paul Harris Fellows and many are multiple Fellows. We are near the top of the list for all time per capita giving in our District 5580.
